SMITH WESTERNS & MAGIC KIDS - split 7"
release date: 4/27/10
If this single has anything to say about 2010, this year will bring the revival of Jeff Lynne’s overwrought emotions and corn-syrup synths. These two bands, now receiving nods from the regular hipster blog nazis, have been on a path headed straight into the sun over the course of the last eight months. Having both just wrapped up a tour with Girls, they’re already your stoner little brother’s favorite two bands. Magic Kids formed in the wake of a stalemated project called Barbaras, which to date still doesn’t have a full-length to its name. The Magic Kids debut, out later this year on True Panther Sounds, will have to suffice. They are the latest in a long line of pop music from Memphis, TN. Smith Westerns, on the other hand, come from deep in the noise and punk jungle of Chicago. After an album of trashy T. Rex odes on Hozac Records, they stand tall in their youth ready to get laid constantly and hit the legal drinking age. Not only are they ahead of the pack, they’ve eaten most of the rest of the dogs they run with. They are currently working on a full length due out in late 2010.

2. Magic Kids - Superball

SWANTON BOMBS - "Wasteland" 7"
release date: 4/27/10
For those not au fait with wrestling vernacular, the Swanton Bomb is a maneuverer, popularized by the three-time world champion Jeff Hardy, that involves leaping off a top rope, flipping your body over and landing back-first upon your opponent. So what does it have to do with Swanton Bombs, the band? “Absolutely nothing,” concedes singer and guitarist Dominic McGuinness. “We just thought it was pretty cool.” Their sound is a visceral, unvarnished blend of blues and punk, underpinned by rich narratives and resolute melodies, and informed by McGuinness and drummer Brendan Heaney’s admiration for The Clash, Television, The Ramones and Richard Hell along with the moody, blues-rock stylings of Randy Newman, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. McGuinness and Heaney are 20 year-old ex-school friends from the London/Essex borders who bonded, aged 11, over their all-consuming love of rock. It was 2001 and their respective worlds had been turned upside-down by The Strokes’ first album. “It was pivotal,” says Heaney. “For us, that was where it all began.” After signing Swanton Bombs to a partnership deal, Turnstile helped them set up their own imprint QUIFF, upon which they are releasing their forthcoming album Mumbo Jumbo and Murder, a brilliantly propulsive and raw slice of blues-rock.
