Trevor Powers, whose stage name is Youth Lagoon, began writing his debut album The Year of Hibernation in 2010. Based around the idea of psychological dysphoria, Powers tried to document the trails of his mind through songs of minimalism and hypnotic ambiance. Powers later described his writing process as "my mind communicating with me, not the other way around...it can take me to scary places but I've realized those bizarre thoughts I have don't define me." After signing with Mississippi-based label Fat Possum Records in 2011, he toured much of the following year before going back into solitude to write.
Wondrous Bughouse, Powers' sophomore album (due March 5 worldwide via Fat Possum), was spawned from what he describes as "becoming more fascinated with the human psyche and where the spiritual meets the physical world." During the time he wrote, Powers became intrigued with the metaphysical universe and blending those ideas with pop music.
"Youth Lagoon is something so personal to me because writing music is how I sort my thoughts, as well as where I transfer my fears," explains Powers. "My mental state is usually pretty sporadic... a lot of this record was influenced by a fear of mortality but embracing it at the same time. Realizing that human life is only great because it is temporary. Experimenting with ideas about dimensions. I'm not a gifted spear, so explaining things is difficult for me. But music always makes sense."

Water Liars, the duo of Justin Kinkel-Schuster and Andrew Bryant, will release their sophomore album Wyoming on March 5th, 2013, via Big Legal Mess / Fat Possum Records. Water Liars spent most of the past year on the road and will continue to tour throughout 2013. Currently, Kinkel-Schuster is playing a series of solo shows under the band's moniker and performs next tonight at New World Brewery in Tampa, FL.
Recorded in their now-hometown of Water Valley, MS in late September, Wyoming will be Water Liars' second LP released in just under a year. At the core of the album are stories of specific, intimate moments that can't help but ring universally true. The band favors simplicity and ample space in their songs, while Justin Kinkel-Schuster's clear, plaintive vocals add to Wyoming's warm yet heartsick expanse. The album ranges musically from contemplative, bluesy waltzes ("Backbone") to lonely, tempered howls ("Fake Heat"); from soulful, heartached swings ("Cut A Line," "You Work Days I Work Nights") to upbeat, but wistful resignations ("Linens"). These 11 uncluttered songs resonate all the way from the breezy, buzzing opener "Sucker" to the closing feedback of "Fire."
Water Liars formed as a serendipitous accident in the summer of 2011, when Kinkel-Schuster (vocals, guitar) and Andrew Bryant (drums, vocals) casually recorded an album's worth of songs over one weekend in Pittsboro, MS. Picked up and released by Misra Records in March 2012, this debut, Phantom Limb, quietly garnered the band praise from NPR ("...an unassuming sleeper, prone to fits of stark gorgeousness"), The AV Club ("unexpectedly lovely"), Paste, and Vice.

New York quintet Ex Cops have announced their debut full-length album, True Hallucinations, will be made available on January 22 via Other Music Recording Co. and made the first single off the record, "James," available to stream via SPIN.com and download via Soundcloud. Formed in 2011 by Brian Harding (ex-Hymns) and Amalie Bruun (ex-Minks), the duo self-released a short-run, homespun CD-EP of hazy, lo-fi recordings featuring Harding's opaque bedroom-pop songwriting juxtaposed with the duo's sun-kissed harmonies. Two of the tracks, "You Are a Lion, I Am a Lamb" b/w "The Millionaire," were soon released to the world on vinyl as the premiere release from Other Music Recording Co. and the pair continued to write new songs while simultaneously playing more live shows, now working as a proper five-piece rock band with the addition of good friends Kai Kennedy, Leif Huckman and Sam Bair.
Keeping a handful of Ex Cops' early sessions in place, the newly expanded lineup took to the studio to record True Hallucinations with John Siket (Blonde Redhead, Yo La Tengo, Sonic Youth, etc.) sitting in the production chair. The resulting album is a mind-altering pop pill that maintains the intimate mood of the original group's sound, but now presented in widescreen Technicolor.

In his native Mississippi and throughout the South, Jimbo Mathus is recognized as the prolific songwriter of born-in-the-bone American music, the torchbearer for Deep South mythology and culture. The lifelong musician, co-founder of the hyper ragtime outfit Squirrel Nut Zippers, has signed to Oxford, MS label Fat Possum Records and will release White Buffalo, produced by Eric "Roscoe" Ambel, on January 22, 2013.
