Rubber Factory Out Now

Listen to 10 A.M. Automatic | Buy Rubber Factory

Check out a few more reviews

From the New York Post: "On their third album in as many years, the Akron, Ohio-based Black Keys have distilled the essence of blues rock into a potent potion all their own.

While the band is often compared to the White Stripes because of their stripped-down guitar-and-drum instrumentation, their sound really lies in the world between dead boogie kings Canned Heat and the gritty and contemporary North Mississippi Allstars.

With songs like the slip 'n' slide "Keep Me" and the blues-bruising Allman joy of "When the Lights Go Out" and "10 AM Automatic" (which references BTO's stuttering delight "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet"), "Rubber Factory" is retro, rootsy bliss.."

From BBC Collective: "Amazingly retro and unbelievably good. A two-piece blues band made up of a guitarist and a drummer may sound like a familiar formula, but Ohio’s Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney ain’t Jack and Meg clones. Their brand of gritty, overdriven valve blues owes less to bluegrass and punk and more to 60s blues giants like Hendrix and Cream. That’s not to say it sounds derivative, these guys feel like they really mean it, giving the LP an emotive fresh sound. It’s varied too, from the souped-up growl of 10am Automatic to the delicate sliding sounds of The Lengths. This record once again puts pay to the theory that white men can’t play the blues."

Rubber Factory, the follow-up to one of 2003's most successful albums, thickfreakness, features more of Patrick and Dan's mix of rough rock n' roll and blues straight out of Akron, Ohio. Rubber Factory is the second Black Key's album out on Fat Possum, and continues the raw, ragged, and loud sound, and this time, with handclaps.

Red Onions in the NY Times

Buy Red Onions

From Jon Pareles NY Times:

"THE RED ONIONS On their five-song, 13-minute debut EP, "The Red Onions" (Flapping Jet/Fat Possum), this band of Mexican-Americans from Gardena, Calif., plays terse, hard-riffing songs full of girl trouble, political frustrations and buzzing guitar. Not content with one retro style, the Red Onions flip through garage-rock, the Stooges, punk and funk, all with the perfect combination of snarl and kick."

"...it seems that talk is as cheap in LA as it is in Water Valley, what I can say in all certainty is that we're still releasing records just as we always have. So we're shoving this sampler out in the hopes that by the time it's in your hands, we'll all have a little more to celebrate.
