For “A World Like That,” Don Bryant reunites with the team behind his 2021 Grammy-nominated album, You Make Me Feel for a one-off single in the spirit of Northern Soul. One of the architects of soul whose influences can be heard all over modern R&B, Bryant is backed by two Hi Rhythm legends, drummer Howard Grimes and the Reverend Charles Hodges on the Hammond organ (full credits are below). Both played on the hits “I Can’t Stand the Rain” and “99 Pounds,” written by Don for his wife, Ann Peebles.
“A World Like That” was written for Bryant by fellow Memphis songwriter John Paul Keith, after the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. In light of the Capitol riots and the hope in a new administration, Bryant felt it was finally time to record it.
“The song reminds of artists like the Detroit Emeralds,” adds producer Scott Bomar. “In the heyday of Hi records, Westbound Records sent them to Memphis to work with Don’s mentor, Willie Mitchell. It’s a new direction for Don.”
